ASHBURN – Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians have a new way to get across the busy Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) corridor between Loudoun County Parkway (Route 607) and Route 28 (Sully Road), according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The new bridge carrying the extended George Washington Boulevard over Route 7 opened to traffic today about five months ahead of schedule. The quarter-mile extension is a four-lane road with a shared-use path along one side and a sidewalk along the other between Russell Branch Parkway and Research Place.

Construction on the Route 7/George Washington Boulevard Overpass Project began in November 2021 and is now substantially complete, with minor work occurring in the coming weeks until final completion with minimal impacts.

The project aims to:

• Improve operations on Route 7
• Relieve congestion at the Route 7 interchanges with Loudoun County Parkway and Ashburn Village Boulevard
• Improve accessibility for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians by connecting roads parallel to Route 7 (Riverside Parkway and George Washington Boulevard) with roads parallel to Route 28 (Pacific Boulevard)
• Improve access to the George Washington University Virginia Science and Technology Campus and the Strayer University Loudoun Campus

The $30.1 million project is financed with federal, state and Loudoun County funding. The construction contractor is Joseph B. Fay Co. of Pittsburgh, PA.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones. Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.
