VDOT News - Hampton Roads

SUFFOLK - As wind and rain continue to impact the region, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District reminds motorists to take precautions to stay safe as they travel through the region. Major tidal flooding and high winds are anticipated for the region. Motorists should limit travel based on weather conditions.

VDOT staff is preparing for potential risks stemming from heavy rainfall and high winds. Crews have been inspecting drainage facilities and clearing them where necessary, readying trucks and equipment, and coordinating debris and tree removal crews. Crews stand ready to respond to any unsafe traveling conditions and damage resulting from the storm.

The I-64 Express Lanes Reversible Roadway in Norfolk may experience intermittent closures.

The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry may experience suspension of service due to high tides and wind. Motorists should anticipate taking an alternative route. Call the ferry hotline at 1-800-VA-FERRY for status updates on ferry service.

Alternate route from the Surry boarding location:

• Take Route 10 to Route 258 to the James River Bridge (Route 17);
• Follow signs for Route 64 West. Exit onto Route 199 toward Williamsburg; and,
• Follow to Route 31 (Jamestown Road).

 Alternate route from the Jamestown boarding location:

• Take Route 31 to Route 199;
• Make a right onto Route 199;
• Merge onto Route 64 east;
• Follow to the James River Bridge exit;
• After traveling over the bridge, make a right onto Route 258, a right onto Route 10; and,
• Follow Route 10 to the Town of Surry traffic signal.

 The causeway to Chincoteague on the Eastern Shore may also experience closures as needed.

 Travelers are encouraged to utilize the following tools provided by VDOT:

• Residents should report any problems such as flooding, downed trees, or road hazards to VDOT’s 24- hour Customer Service Center by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling 1-800-FOR-ROAD.
• Statewide and local traffic conditions are available by calling 511 (dial or say nine to go straight to Hampton Roads info), visiting www.511virginia.org or downloading the free 511 Virginia mobile app. 511 Virginia provides real-time road conditions and interstate cameras.
