VDOT Road and Bridge Standards
Welcome to the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Road and Bridge Standards web pages.
The release of the 2016 edition of the VDOT Road and Bridge Standards are in an electronic-only format and printed copies are no longer provided. The online PDF version of the VDOT Road and Bridge Standards is the official set of standard drawings for all VDOT projects.
VDOT's standard drawings are not distributed or offered in any CADD format (example microstation.dgn or autocad.dwg).
Note to users of the VDOT Road & Bridge Standards:
The Standard Drawings contained in the VDOT Road & Bridge Standards are signed and sealed engineering drawings that are copyrighted materials of VDOT and the Commonwealth of Virginia. VDOT’s policy is to offer the Standard Drawings in a secure electronic format and each Standard is available on this website. Plan assemblies using the Road & Bridge Standards shall reference each standard used. Inserting the Standard Drawings into VDOT, locality, or private development plan assemblies, or modifying the Standard Drawings in any way, is not permitted.
For project specific applications, special design drawings based on VDOT standards shall include all details, notes, dimensions, and quantities necessary to completely construct the item. Drawings shall be done under the direct supervision of a professional engineer licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, who signs and seals the drawing and assumes professional responsibility for the design.
See IIM LD-243 for additional information on signing and sealing of special design drawings and modified standards.
Roadside safety hardware standards (guardrail and concrete barrier) are crash tested devices and shall not be modified for project specific applications.
